NOTES

Much of this history is backed up by Census Reports and written/certified evidence.
In one research case the name Fawcett has been picked up or misinterpreted as "Frank".
LDS (Latter Day Saints) Records can sometimes be fanciful. Much Material on the Fawcett/Fassett family is on a LDS - CD ROM Disc# 105. The Submitter was Jerald Fawcett. 933 East 75 North Bountiful, Utah 84010. USA
I cannot place him as an immediate relative although his research covered a great many aspects of our family.

In the case of Fassett: I am reliably informed from the UK that we Fawcetts were known as Fassett. When Aaron Fawcett married Charlotte Derberidge on 2.9.1813, dual naming was used. When his son, Henry Fawcett (b 1814), married Harriett Eddicett, He used the name Fawcett. Likewise, the marriage certificate shows Aaron's name as father: Aaron Fawcett. The two names blended then, thereafter, Fassett became Fawcett.

Henry William (b.1818) was hard to trace because in some documents his christening date became a death date. Henry was alive and well to get married and have children.

One has to remember that in the 16th to 19th Centuries, most records were kept in Churches. The best record ever kept was "The Doomsday Book, a population register carried out by William the Conqueror in 1086.

Starting in 16th Century, (the 1500s), the only persons who could read and write would have been the Parish Priest/Pastor or Clerk of the Church; moneyed folk and of course, Royalty. Thus, local entries were made into Church records sometimes using phonetics.

Als Saunde c 1580, the wife of Bartholomew Fassett would probably have been "Alice". Also, Biblical names were often used and I found that Hannah became Anna and vice versa. Some first names were handed down through the generations and can also be a clue to where a family originated.

Yorkshire is a Fassett/Fawcett stronghold. It would not be easy to meld those families with ours, as the proof is difficult to obtain – our family originated in Berkshire.

Research has shown the family name as Fassett, Fossitt, Fassat even Faucett before it became Fawcett. Entry spelling was seldom consistent, but always phonetic Fassett is sometimes written Fafsett. Further, the female line was often recorded as a single name or no name at all - e.g. unknown.

Birth years are used thus c.1852 for the reason that actual births were not registered only a Christening date. This was usually within a week of a birth. In time, Birth Registers were used and William Fawcett's family is well documented, especially in New Zealand and U.S.A.

England , from Henry VIII, was a Protestant Country. In those early times it did not pay to be Catholic nor Jewish, hence the Church Records (or lack of them).

In the 19th Century, records were slowly taken over by the "State" and were recorded in vast registers. At one time they were found at "Somerset House". Today, the majority of records are to be found at The National Archives (TNA) in the UK .

It would be appreciated if anyone has thoughts on the following to contact the Webmaster.

WHAT DOES THE NAME MEAN?

Northern English: habitational name from Fawcett in Cumbria or Facit in Lancashire, both named from Old English fāh '(brightly) colored' + sīde 'slope', 'hillside'. A further possible source, Forcett in North Yorkshire , is named from Old English ford 'ford' + set 'animal fold'. More on the meaning...

In the instance of Charlotte Derberidge, the Wife of Aaron Fassett and later, Thomas Pilgrim – I have elected to use this spelling as it defines the person. There are several spellings of the name: Durberidge Derberge

I wish to thank Rhonda Maher for her extensive material on William Fawcett b 1816

and Charlotte Derberidge's marriage to Thomas Pilgrim. Also for her assistance with

Fawcett History and documents provided which added greatly to my research.

This may not be Sarah Cutts – just a coincidence because the 1871 Census for the Fawcett Household at 12 Church Street, Henry occupation…Ironmongers porter finds Henry and Sarah living together.

Note: I must admit that the Census must have been an annoyance to some folk; many, probably nationwide, didn't fill in full names or dates. Most were as accurate as circumstances would allow. The legibility of the handwritten Census documents were sometimes open to error, even in transcribing.

Henry married Sarah Cutts , in June 1879 at Whitechapel, London, England . Folio 1c page 685, Sarah b. 13.5.1838 in Bantingford, Herts, England . William Fawcett , b. 22nd Sept. 1816 in London Middlesex England , and his birth is registered at St Mary's. d. 7th Jul 1887 in Wellington New Zealand : Buried: 9th Jul 1887 in Bolton St, Wellington, New Zealand . He died at Douglas? St., Wellington at the age of 73 from Senile Decay and Exhaustion.

William married Jane Smedley , 9th Oct 1836 in St Marys Parish, Berkshire - England ,

Jane was b. 28th Aug 1816 in London England , (daughter of William Smedley and Lydia ) d. 3rd June 1871 in Karori, Wellington New Zealand. Buried: 5th June1871 in Botton St Cemetery Wellington, New Zealand . Jane Fawcett nee Smedley died at the age of 56 from Malignant Polypus of the nose.

1841 Census shows that William was aged 20 living with wife Jane at St. Botolphs - London: Address not readable. He was a printer. (William was also known to work as a bricklayer's labourer).

It is thought that both his wife, Jane, and family of two were living in the poor house in London; a birth certificate actually states Pigney Lane. When it was decided that they would try and go a better life, William applied to go to New Zealand , {agent was F.W. Germingham, residence Friar Street Reading).

They boarded the barque "Thomas Harrison" on 24th May 1842 and sailed from Gravesend two days later. They came out under the scheme for labourers applying for a free passage. The journey was to be a slow one as the vessel did not reach Nelson, New Zealand until 25th Oct 1842. It should be noted that William and his family left England under the name of Fassett but appears to have started a new life with a new name Fawcett.

On board were seven cabin passengers with 105 adults and 80 children below decks. Dr Renwick (Doctor on Board) laid down very strict rules for the health of migrants and his care paid dividends as there were only two deaths on board. It was recorded that no vessel had been known to arrive so clean and in such good order than the "Thomas Harrison ".

William Fawcett and Family moved to Wellington approximately 1850. It's recorded he lived in Willis St. Wellington in 1853. William owned and operated a large general store in Guznee Street, Wellington 1866/67 and 1870/ 71.

In October 1854 the first if the Latter Day Saints Latter Day Saints missionaries arrived in New Zealand from Australia .

In 1873/74 William lived in Molesworth St. It is also known that he had three sections of land at Ohariu in the years of 73/74.

William and Jane settled in a small town of Wakefield, not far out of Nelson. They lived in a clay house of which he was a tenant. The land consisted of 2 ¼ acres of crops, which were divided into 1¼ of wheat, ½ of barley and ½ of potatoes. They had two pigs and eight poultry.

Dec 29th 1875:

Walked 16 or 18 miles today to look up Brother William Fawcett in Ohariu Valley. Learned he was in town, but found his daughter, where I got a lot of our Tracts, Book of Mormon, and Voice of Warning etc. I must say her mother and father-in-law, although they do not belong to the church, treated me very nice. I enjoyed the first bowl of bread and milk I have had since I left home.

Jan 23 1876:

Dinner at Stratford's on invitation. Not so cordial, not going to meeting and even Mr Fawcett declined to go. Went down to the hall with heavy heart, sat and waited and then went down on the wharf.

Feb 18th 1876:

A week ago was at George Stratford's for dinner and in the evening talked to Mr Watson who has been a member of the Church but not keen now but did not invite me to call again.

Late Feb:

Day at George Stratford's.

26th March 1876:

Went to Creek, wash and change. PM back to Wellington with a Mr Hume and son, prejudiced. Mail 1 Pound from Charles. . Mrs Duff said Alfred (another Missionary) had been and I was to clear out. So I went to Thomas Watson, made welcome. The Lord has softened Mrs Watson's heart.

March 28th 1876:

Helping Watson's rebuild. Old Mr Fawcett is also working, and a little sandy- haired man named Edwards.

April 8th 1876:

Building Chimney at Watson's.

April 16th 1876:

Been all week at Mr Watson's. Yesterday he gave me 1 Pound and tomorrow to all appearances, I shall be a homeless wanderer.

May 3rd 1876:

Home Mail. Slept at Watson's. Thursday, sudden rain as I was off to Ohariu. Ran to Mrs Stratford and stayed there till after breakfast the next day. They told me that whenever I came to town, I was welcome to a bed. Borrowed 2/- postage from Mrs

Stratford.

17th July 1876:

Just before Charley (missionary) came over from Christ Church. An old lady by the name of Eagle was around here visiting and she has given me a shameful character, stating that while in Utah, she was well acquainted with me and said I was a lazy

shiftless drunkard, a profligator of the lowest and worst degree, that I was a stain on even the Mormon community. She strongly advised people here not to countenance or permit me to enter their houses for I was a very subtle, dangerous, lowlife

character that "virtuous girls" were very much in danger of, on account of a delvcive power that I possessed a kind odd devilish magnetic influence.

Oct 30th Mon 1876:

George Fawcett came along with an empty cart and hauled things up to Mrs Wileys and not long after a young boy came along and said he would haul us both to town, luggage and all for 2/-. Ok. Mrs Wiley deeply affected. (she was leaving the area for Lytlelton).

17 Joseph Fawcett , b. 03-06-1839 in St Mary Reading Berkshire England , occupation Sheep Farmer, d. 02-01-1909 in Ogden Weber, Utah - America : buried: 00-01-1909 in Henefer Summit, Utah, America . Joseph Fawcett was the first child of William & Jane Fawcett (nee Smedley). He was born 3rd June 1839 in Pipe Court, Reading, County of Berkshire, England . His birth is registered at St Mary's.

1841 Census: Joseph is not with his parents. Cannot locate him.

Joseph was three years old when he travelled with his parents to New Zealand on board the "Thomas Harrison".

The "Thomas Harrison" was a barque of 400 tons which left Gravesend England 26-05-1842 and arrived in Nelson, New Zealand on the 5-10-1842. Joseph was about 11yrs old when he went to Wellington to live.

He married (1) MaryAnn Stratford , 29th Sept1861 in Wesleyan Church, Wellington, New Zealand, b. 10th Jan-1840 in St Andrew, Holborn, Middlesex - England, (daughter of George Alder Stratford and Mary Ann Hollingshead ) d. 17th May -1877 in Huntsville, Weber, Utah - America: Buried: May -1877 in Huntsville, Weber, Utah, America. MaryAnn Stratford left England for New Zealand on 3rd Oct.1841 on the ship" Clifton" and arrived in New Zealand 18th Feb -1842. On arrival in New Zealand , the family settled in Karori, Wellington.

Joseph worked a section of Maori land and seemed to have a very diversified operation. Charlotte, Joseph's third child recorded that "My father had a dairy farm. He had cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, geese… well every animal you can mention". The family apparently had sheep and became very adept at handling them.

The official marriage record lists Joseph Fawcett as a sheepman. Joseph was also a good horseman. For several years he rode as a jockey. He was small of stature and often had to wear a belt loaded with lead to meet the weight requirements. On 24th Dec1871, he joined a group of immigrants going to Salt Lake City, Utah aboard the SS "Nevada". These were the first Immigrants of the Latter Day Saints Church to leave New Zealand for America .

The voyage was very rough and the passengers called the ship "The Rolling Moses".

MaryAnn was ill most of the trip. Charlotte her daughter, tells of a little incident that happened on the trip. She wandered away from the family and eventually found her way to the upper deck where first class passengers were enjoying a sumptuous meal. Noticing the little girl looking on, one of the passengers gave her a plate of delicacies. Charlotte looked at the plate wide-eyed and turned and ran to the lower deck to deliver the plate of goodies to her ailing mother.

They had a short stop in the Hawaiian Islands. Joseph seemed quite attracted by the Kanaka Divers. He would stand on the deck of the ship and toss coins into the water, which divers would catch before the coins reached the bottom. They landed at San Francisco in late January 1872 and boarded a train bound for Salt Lake City.

On arrival in Salt Lake City, they found work was scarce and times were hard.

While in Salt Lake, Joseph Stratford Fawcett was born in the spring of 1874 they moved to Centreville where Emma Louise was born. In late 1875 Joseph was given employment herding the Church sheep in the mountains around Huntsville.

Charlotte said that this was the happiest time of her life. They used to go out with their father in the summer and live in a cabin. On one occasion while they were out in the range, Joseph had gone into town and left MaryAnn, the children alone and a hired man, alone. During the night there was a commotion heard outside. MaryAnn got up to see what the trouble was, and she was soon joined by the hired hand. A bear had got into the corral with the sheep. They were able to scare the bear off, but not before some sheep were killed and others severely wounded. The rest of the night was spent on guard.

Three more children were born to Joseph and MaryAnn after they came to Utah. MaryAnn seemed to miss New Zealand and her parents very much. Charlotte said that many times she would find her mother crying. After baby MaryAnn was born in Huntsville, her mother appeared to do quite well, but was weak and stayed in the upstairs portion of the house. One of the children, Emma, fell down the stairs and MaryAnn got out of bed to take care of her. She caught cold and had a relapse. On 17th May 1877, just 13 days after the baby was born, her mother passed away and was buried in the Huntsville Cemetery. MaryAnn's grave went unmarked until 1979 when the descendants got together and placed a marker at the grave site.

Joseph bought a few sheep of his own to Henefer, Summit, in 1879, then to Echo.

After MaryAnn died, Joseph remarried - some three years later - (2) 25th March 1880, MaryAnn Richins, in Endowment House, Utah, America . The marriage was not a happy one. Joseph began drinking. While working he would never touch a drop, but on his days off, he would completely drown his sorrows. In later years Joseph helped his son Joseph Stratford Fawcett, on his farm.

He was a loving husband, a kind father and a dependable hard worker and a true friend. Honest beyond question and ever willing to share and help anyone in need. His descendants carry a great name and a heritage they can be proud of.

This is compiled from extracts taken from Margery Bitters (his great grand daughter)."History of Joseph Fawcett"

In a letter to a nephew, Howard, in New Zealand dated April 11th 1901, he tells of a letter from his sister which may have been Priscilla. He also describes the winters as lots of snow and very cold. People not making any money and just managing to make enough to keep food on the table. It sounds as if he was very homesick for New Zealand and longing to go back for a visit. He says he would love to see a good flower garden once more before he dies as he had not seen one for 27 years. They only kept flowers in pots, as the ground often froze over. His wish was to never come true, as he never revisited New Zealand . Joseph died 2nd Jan -1909 in Ogden, Weber.

The 1880 U.S. Census shows Joseph's family living at Henneferville, Summit, Utah.

Charles d. 24the August 1903 in TeKiri, New Zealand : Buried 26the August 1903 in Hawera Cemetery, New Zealand Their marriage was very unhappy in the respect that Charles drank very heavily and knocked Priscilla about. He used to go to hotels and steal liquor and in the end he was jailed.

In one of the letters she wrote to her brother Joseph, she states she divorced, but no records have been found to clarify this. Charles Richard Wiley died in 1903 and Priscilla married a James Wilson in 1914. It must be assumed from her letter that she was living with James Wilson for sometime before marrying him, as in her 1899 letter she calls herself Priscilla Wilson and writes of marrying a nice man.

Her religion was of the Salvation Army. She died of Cardiac Disease.

It appears that Charles Richard Wiley used to drink fairly heavily and spent some time in a jail. He was considered the black sheep of the family. He also sold bales of hay which he were arranged over tree stumps, so that they would look fuller .He also had an illicit Still. It is thought that they were divorced, but no records of this can be found as yet.

Charles Richard Wiley married an Alice Lillian Morey in 1894, and fathered a further six children

Charles died from Asthma and Valvular Disease of the Heart on 24th Aug 1903 in Hawera, Taranaki and is buried at Hawera.

As a postscript to this story it had been thought that Charles had married Alice according to the birth certificate of the first child Lillian. On checking through Birth, Death and Marriage files of New Zealand for 1893-1905, no marriage entry can be found.

New Zealand . William Charles Hamilton Wiley was classed as handicapped. As yet I've not found out in what way. Cause of Death. Carcinoma of Bladder. Senility.

ii Charlotte Amelia Jane Wiley b. 3rd Sept 1875.

iii David Robert Wiley , b. 20th Nov 1884 in Dannevirke, New Zealand, d. 03-08-1905 in Mokau, Taranaki, New Zealand. He remained unmarried until his untimely death at the age of 21yrs on 3rd Aug 1905 at Mokau, Taranaki, New Zealand .

There was a coroners' report into his death as it was due to a logging accident. It appears from the coroner's inquest that the family didn't keep in contact with one another, as the gentleman taken to identify the body was his Uncle, David Thomas Wiley and he stated he had only known David Robert about 3 months. He states "I am the deceased's uncle, his father being my brother who died 18 months ago. I had never met the deceased until I met him at Mr Kelly's mill, Mokau River about 3 months ago. His mother lives at Foxton . He was generally working away from home. From what I saw of the deceased he appeared to be a steady careful young man. He belonged to 'TeKara' (I am not sure what is meant by this).

It appears the accident happened about 5pm when David and a group of other men went to cut down some trees to log for the mill. While felling the tree, it fell at the wrong angle crashing into another tree, which fell on David. He had been standing about 30ft away. The Coroner concluded that he was accidentally killed by a tree falling upon him, while at work and no blame was attached to any person.

Deceased was born at Ohiro Valley just outside Wellington and belonged to the family of Spicer's, well known and respected settlers in Ohiro Valley. Her first identity in the Hutt Valley was when she came to reside in Belmont where after 20 years of residence she took up her quarters in Tama St, Allentown, Lower Hutt. Clara Fawcett was the fifth daughter born to William and Jane Fawcett (nee Smedley). Clara married Luther Gausden (Luke) Wiley (her sister Priscilla marrying Luther's brother) at the Holy Trinity Church, Ohariu Valley on 30th August 1873. Luther Gausden (Luke) Wiley , b. 17th Jan 1852 in Hutt Wellington New Zealand, (son of Hamilton James Wiley and Jane Gausden ). Occupation Labourer, Miller, Farmer, d. 22-08-1921 in Kawhia, New Zealand : Buried 25th Aug 1921 in Kawhia, New Zealand . His cause of death was cystitis toxemia.

They had 12 children. Luther and Clara made their home in the Taranaki region, however in later years they went their separate ways. Clara moved to Auckland where she worked in a maternity home

Luther earned a lot of respect with the Maoris. The following is a copy of the Obituary which was in the "Kawhia Settler" dated 26th August 1921.

Although not unexpected, the news of the death of Mr L Wiley was received with no less real regret, for his business relations both as a pioneer settler, and later, as a storekeeper, had gained for him widespread respect. Born at the Hutt over 70 years

ago, he spent his early boyhood on his fathers farm in that district., subsequently moving across the Straits, where he was placed in charge ( though quite a youth ) of a large gang of men Engaged in railway construction works between Blenheim and

Picton. He then drifted into the Sawmilling business at Taungatara on the Eltham Rd about 30 years ago. These were the times when the butter was 4d a lb and pioneering implied untold hardship but grit and good land stood by those early Taranaki settlers and he was able to sublet his property satisfactorily when he reverted to road contracting, and later to saw milling on the Kahui Rd in partnership with Mr J Rothery. Selling out his interest, he then migrated northwards and then in partnership with Connell, commenced an extensive milling industry on the Mokau river; scows ( the first to enter this river ) taking the timber to Sydney and elsewhere. About 18 years ago, disposing of the plant to Mr Grenaway, he settled at Te Rauamoa where he became actively engaged in local enterprises, amongst other matters, being actively instrumental in promoting the butter factory there, to which a milling plant was attached. After 5 years as a bush settler he came to Kawhia, carrying on business here, but still retaining a lively interest in farming by acquiring further property in Kawhia South.

He was a man of considerable mental and physical energy, and his unbounded confidence in the future of the Harbour and district led him to support any movement calculated to promote his interests. Many a person, Maori and Pakeha can recall acts of quiet generosity, which went far to raise him in the esteem of his fellow citizens.

His funeral took place yesterday and was attended by a very large congress, the Rev CBW Seton officiating.

Luther left a Will which is in the Hamilton Court. The probate Number is BCDG 4420 1458/21. This Will was filed 30-09-1921.

Cromarty of Port Stephens

From Port Stephens Council Website.

Captain William Cromarty came to NSW with his wife in 1824. He had associations with the Australian Agricultural Co., and received a grant of 340 acres at River, near Booral, "for efficient services rendered to the Government".  He later decided that land on the northern side of Port Stephens was more valuable and transferred his land grant to a site on the Karuah River.

The A.A. Company was anxious to claim the land stretching northward from the shores of Port Stephens and wanted it without the encumbrances of independent settlers. Surveyor General John Oxley, was sent to Port Stephens and after long negotiations, another land transfer was effected, with Captain Cromarty taking up final permanent residence on "300 acres, more or less" at Salamander Bay on a long finger of land poking north-east into the harbour.

Cromarty became a pilot at Newcastle, succeeding William Eckford in 1833, when he was also engaged to sound and chart the Hunter River . After receiving a serious injury while piloting a vessel, he resigned and settled at Soldiers Point where he had been granted land in lieu of the piece at Booral. Here he did cargo work,  trading between Port Stephens, Newcastle and Sydney in a small brig named "The Fame".

He and his son William both died in1st September, 1838, apparently in an attempt to salvage a boat from One Mile Beach. His wife, with another son and three daughters, stayed on at Soldiers Point, where they kept a small store for passing whalers and fishermen. For a time soldiers were stationed on Cromarty land to protect the widow and her family from escaped convicts (from in the South and Tahlee on the northern side of Port Stephens). From then on the land was known as Soldiers Point.

Mrs Cromarty died in 1862, and was buried at Soldiers Point, as storms prevented the crossing to Carrington where her husband's remains had been taken.  Mrs. Cromarty's headstone has been preserved by the Historical Society and remains in it's original position. Captain William Cromarty's daughter, Cecilia, married a Captain Banks, and afterwards settled a few miles from the Cromarty home on the shores of Port Stephens. Captain Banks also had a small trading vessel and carried dredged shell from the Port to Newcastle where it was burnt for lime at the Stockton kilns. His wife was a well-known identity in the pioneering days for her bush-wife capabilities.

Magnus Cromarty, William Cromarty's younger son, left Port Stephens as a young man, and headed for the Bendigo Goldfields. Four years later he returned with 800 pounds. Using this money Magnus Cromarty bought a portion of land at Bobs Farm. In 1859 he married Christina MacIntosh, an immigrant from the Isle of Skye. They reared 12 children. On his land Magnus Cromarty grew wheat and arrowroot and kept sheep, pigs and poultry. He brought the first wheeled vehicle to the Port Stephens area - a spring cart that was somehow pulled through miles of virgin and tractless country.

More on the Meaning of the Surname

APPENDIX-1:

The surname of FAWCETT was a locational name 'of Forcett' in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and of Facit, a spot in County Lancashire. Local names usually denoted where a man held his land, and indicated where he actually lived. Early records of the name mention Fagheside (without surname) who was documented in Lancashire in the year 1119, and as Faxide (without surname) in the year 1247. Alan de Fausyde, was recorded in 1248 in Scotland. Richard Fascet, was documented in County Yorkshire, in the year of 1300. Elias de Ffaghesude appears in the year 1332 in County Lancashire. Thomas de Forset was recorded in County Surrey in 1327. Adam de Fawsyde of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379.

During the Middle Ages, when people were unable to read or write, signs were needed for all visual identification. For several centuries city streets in Britain were filled with signs of all kinds, public houses, tradesmen and even private householders found them necessary. This was an age when there were no numbered houses, and an address was a descriptive phrase that made use of a convenient landmark. At this time, coats of arms came into being, for the practical reason that men went into battle heavily armed and were difficult to recognise. It became the custom for them to adorn their helmets with distinctive crests, and to paint their shields with animals and the like. Coats of arms accompanied the development of surnames, becoming hereditary in the same way.

Later instances of the name mention Samuel Fasset (preacher) and Elizabeth Shaw, who were married at St. Peter, Cornhill, London in the year 1627. Edward Fassett and Isabella Jackson were married at St. George's, Hanover Square, London in 1775. In many parts of central and western Europe, hereditary surnames began to become fixed at around the 12th century, and have developed and changed slowly over the years. As society became more complex, and such matters as the management of tenure, and in particular the collection of taxes were delegated to special functionaries, it became imperative to distinguish a more complex system of nomenclature to differentiate one individual from another. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884.<back to top>
